SDA Myth Busters

Myth 1: “SDA is just group homes with support workers.”

Fact: SDA is the bricks and mortar, the physical home. It is not the support services.
Participants can choose their support provider separately (SIL, ILO, drop-in).
At Apollo SDA, we design quality SDA tailored to a participant’s functional and aspirational needs.  A home where they thrive, feel independent, safe and love to live. They choose who supports them.

Myth 2: “Only people with physical disabilities qualify for SDA.”

Fact: SDA is available to people with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs — this includes a range of disabilities, including intellectual disability, autism, psychosocial disability, or acquired brain injury.
It’s about the level of need, not the type of disability.

Myth 3: “There aren’t any SDA homes near me.”

Fact: SDA availability is growing, and demand helps drive development.
Apollo SDA develops homes in key locations based on participants’ needs and preferences and demand in the area.  We welcome early engagement from people with disability, Support Coordinators, Support Providers and others to help us build where people want to live.

Myth 4: “You can’t live alone in SDA.”

Fact: Participants may live alone, with others, or even with family, depending on their SDA funding and personal preferences.
Apollo SDA offers 1-bedroom villas, duplexes, apartments and shared homes in a variety of designs Robust, High Physical Support, Improved Liveability, and Fully Accessible.

Myth 5: “It takes years to move into an SDA home.”

Fact: With early engagement, the right documentation and without construction delays, the process can move faster than people think.
Apollo SDA works closely with participants, their families and support networks to match participants to homes under construction, modular developments or ready to move in that suit their needs in an area they love.

Myth 6: “Participants have to accept whatever home is available.”

✅ Fact: Participants have choice and control under the NDIS.
We encourage participants and Support Coordinators to view multiple homes, ask questions, and select a home that aligns with their lifestyle, preferences, funding and goals.
