A New Chapter for Matthew: Moving Into His SDA Home
We recently spoke to Matthew’s family about his transition into suitable SDA housing. It’s a reality many families face. Here is a raw and real insight into Matthew’s journey.
Meeting the Transition With Confidence
Matthew’s family are confident Matthew will adjust well to his new home. Over the years, he’s spent time away on Short-Term Accommodation (STA) and respite stays, experiences that have helped him grow comfortable with being away from home. This means the move to SDA may feel to him like another one of those familiar stays, making the transition easier and less daunting.
Building Daily Living Skills
One of the positive outcomes we’re hoping for is Matthew’s chance to learn and practice some basic household skills. As his family shared:
“We hope that he will be able to learn how to do some basic chores about the house, such as loading the washing machine, etc.”
These small steps can make a big difference, helping Matthew feel engaged and connected to his home environment. He enjoys being around others and, even though he isn’t able to converse, he likes people to talk to him and can understand the basics of what they say. He also finds comfort in watching people go about their activities. With the right co-tenant, someone easy-going and happy to talk to him, Matthew will continue to feel included and supported.
When Matthew is at home he loves to watch and listen to 60’s music videos on YouTube, especially the Irish singer Daniel O’Donnell. It often brings a big smile to his face and with encouragement he may even dance to the music for a few seconds. Matthew’s support workers cultivate his love of music, even playing songs in their cars and accompanying him to venues where that era of music is played. It’s this level of care and attention to detail Matthew’s family truly admire.
Support That Makes the Difference
Matthew’s daily support will continue through Disability Accommodation Specialists (DAS), providing Supported Independent Living (SIL) and Community Access. This consistency ensures that while his living environment changes, the care and companionship he relies on remains steady. As Matthew’s parents optimistically explains, “We’re confident this will give him the foundation he needs to enjoy his new home and community”.
A Big Step for the Family Too
Of course, this move is a significant change for Matthew’s parents as well. Like many families, they’ll miss seeing him come home each day after community activities. Instead of visiting the house, which might confuse him, they plan to catch up over morning teas and lunches while he’s out with his support worker. Matthew’s new home in Bellara is surrounded by natural attractions and a relaxed seaside lifestyle, which is the perfect match for Matthew and his family.
This transition also opens new opportunities for his parents, who can now enjoy meals of their own choosing and taking short trips without the constraints of needing to be home by a certain time. While they’ll always carry the natural worries of any parents, they’re ready to embrace this new stage with confidence and optimism.
Looking Forward
Matthew’s story is a powerful reminder that SDA is not just about buildings, it’s about creating homes where people can grow, belong, and be supported. With the right care in place and the love of his family behind him, Matthew’s move is a positive step toward greater independence and a richer daily life.
As mentioned in Matthew’s story, he is currently looking for a co-tenant, so if you are looking for a High Physical Home in Bellara, Bribie Island, contact the Apollo SDA team on 1300 937 279 or email admin@apollosda.com.au
